Enabling RDP Audio in Windows Server 2008 R2

One would think that enabling audio would be simple in Server 2008 R2 but it took me awhile to find the right settings to enable it. In the past with Windows Sever 2003 and even with Server 2012 it seems fairly straight forward to enable audio but 2008 is a whole different story.

By default Windows Sever 2008 R2 has audio disabled for Terminal Services which for most people is acceptable as they don’t require audio in Remote Desktop. Audio and video within the RDP protocol is still barely acceptable for most, especially in low bandwidth deployments. I had to use two different guides online to figure this out so figured I one create a complete one.

So here’s my simple guide to enable audio:

1.) Launch Server Manger > Configuration > Services (Or type “services.msc “ in the command prompt)

2.) Enable both “Windows Audio” and “Windows Audio Endpoint Builder Properties” by right clicking the services and under the general tab change the Startup Type to “Automatic” and hit the start button. Do this for both serveries.

3.) Type “tsconfig.msc” in the command prompt and launch the Terminal Services Configuration.

4.) Under Connections, right click “RDP-tcp” and select Properties

5.) Under the Client Settings Tab, under Redirections uncheck Audio to enable Audio redirection, hit apply and close everything out.

6.) Log off and log back in and listen to the sweet sounds of windows login.

My Crossfit Experience

Years of IT work and college finally caught up to me. Having a desk job and being on a computer for the majority of the day defiantly doesn’t help your body. After realizing that I wasn’t nearly in shape as I was in high school when I played soccer, I decided to do something about it. I tried at home workout DVD’s like P90X, Insanity, and even P90X3. I found that I would only do days at a time and wouldn’t even finish the workouts most of the time. Between running a company, college, being an EMT, and now working on my house I didn’t have much time for working out. I needed something relatively short and something that would motivate me. There are several gyms in my area that I looked at it but an intense workout program called Crossfit caught my eye. Lucky for me I found one right in the same building as my company. After researching it a bit a coworker and I decided to give it a shot. Its intimidating going for the first time, especially knowing how out of shape you are but the instructors were great showing us everything and scaling the workouts down for us to start. I’ve been going to ADK Crossfit in South Glens Falls, NY. I would highly recommend it to anyone. The trainers Israel, Katie, and James are awesome and it’s a great group of people there. I started March 26th, 2014 and have been going every weekday so far. So I’m on day 17 and I feel great. I look forward to going every day. I find that knowing that I’m working out later I end up eating healthier. I also feel like I have more energy at the end of the day. I’ll post updates along the way with my progress but so far so good!
